What makes a Mummers Theme?
Mummers get their insperation for their presentations whether it's from televsion, books, movies, past themes but done a new way. The Mummers get their inspiration from just about anything they do.
What are the important aspects of the theme?
Clubs meet throughout the year discussing their shows some of the aspecsts that they meet on are music, suits (what mummers refer to their costumes as.) and presentations. clubs meet weekly and sometimes twice a week just to rehearse and discuss their upcoming show.
Costumes
Some clubs meet with meet designers or have people in their club design their costumes. The drawings are then taken to the costumers, tailors or sewers to get made. Clubs then see samples and finalize what you see on New Years Day.
Music
This gets to be an interesting aspect of the show. Some divisons are allowed pre-recorded music and other divisions have live music. the Comic, fancy, and Fancy brigade division can go with pre-recorded music that has be mixed together in studios or other facilites to get their music sets.
On the other hand the Wench Brigade and String Band divisions use live music. The Wench Brigades have brass bands that have a set list and play music that's related to their theme. While the String Bands play their msuic and drill, the band themselves have many members in their clubs who help write arrange their sets or have help from others in deveolping their routines.
Presentations
This is something that goes hand and hand with music, sometimes music is played becuase it fits a particular gimmick bands are trying to tell the point in the rountine or its a song related to the characters coming out in the show. Overall this the most time consuming aspect of every show. Meetings upon meetings are discussed on how much they can cram into a set time limit show.
Some aspects range form the very steps a group will do so the drill instructors or choreographers teach their shows for weeks or even months to amateurs. One other major touch that meetings are done is to finalize any props/scenery to enhance a mummers show.
Once bands meet and finalize some Mummers organizations go as far as having dress rehearsals to fine tune and get a first look at the music, drill, and costumes altogether.
The Final Tally of Man Hours
With all the meeting a preping the Mummers spend close to over 2,000 hours in just preping thier costumes, music, and drill rehearsals.
